David A. Clayman, MD
Director
Genetic Consultants of Ft Lauderdale, FL

Dr. Clayman is a board certified neuroradiologist and the parent of a teenage son with autism. Dr. Clayman, was formerly Chief of Neuroradiology and Associate Professor of Radiology at University Medical Center in Jacksonville, Florida, now Shands Hospital Jacksonville. In 1995 one of his twin sons was diagnosed as developmentally disabled. In response to the diagnosis and with limited information available at the time, Dr. Clayman started the Jericho School for Children with Autism. Following a series of setbacks at the school, the Clayman family moved to South Florida in search of better educational opportunities. Dr. Clayman is pleased to know that the Jericho School is presently in very capable hands and helping many preschool aged children with autism.

In the following years the Claymans worked to provide for all of their children while attempting to maintain a modicum of sanity in the home. Typical of many families attempting to understand the pathophysiology of autism, the Claymans struggled to provide many therapies for their son, including special diets, speech and occupational therapies, biomedical therapies and immunotherapy. After struggling through their disabled son’s adolescent years with all the associated changes of puberty, the fragile support structures in the home finally collapsed and their son was placed in a residential educational center.

Dr. Clayman has spent untold hours attempting to understand the biochemical issues of autism, including acid-base imbalances present in many autistics. He is grateful to have met Dr. Mark Geier, whose own studies of the disorder have helped to establish coherence out of the seemingly disparate multisystem abnormalities present in persons with autism. Dr. Clayman’s son is now a patient of Dr. Geier.
Dr. Clayman has also had the opportunity to contemplate his son’s future, and believes that a large percentage of our older teenagers and young adults with autism will thrive and live fuller lives in an environment that is focused on the specific needs of these older children with developmental disabilities. Joining forces with Valerie Herskowitz, also a parent of a teenager with autism, these two pioneering parents have created AFDDAA, the Association For Developmentally Disabled Adults and Adolescents, with the goal of starting within the next few years a Residential Permaculture Farm community in Hendry County, Florida.
